Huddersfield 2 - 1 Posh
Attendance 9531
By Tony H
My deepset apologies as I have been unavailable since saturday, and therefore unable to do a full report. However, I have this morning had a flick through some threads on here, and I see the fans appear to be turning on Gould, and that there is talk of a rift between him and Fry. I know nothing that I can add to this, as I dont sit and watch them during the games. However, it is crystal clear to me why there COULD be a rift between them, and it hit me when I saw Fry on Football League Review on sky. Fry said that Gould has done a good job for Posh, but that his role is to train the team and work on tactics, whilst "I pick the the team and choose the formation". There, my friends, is the problem. I was beginning to think Frys ego had shrunk a little, but no - same old same old. How can you have one bloke working closely all week with the players and working on things for the next game for another bloke to make his own different decicions on who will play?
I was gobsmacked by the formation and team at Huddersfield. Why suddenly change to 4-3-3, or was it 4-4-2? You can tell when Fry picks a team. Constantine was on the right wing first half, like a lost sheep. He was useless. Kennedy was at full back along with Newton was ran the right side for us, whilst Legg played left wing. What a shambles he was. Back to his usual self, not getting involved in defending and drifting about in a forward position, and berating everyone else, even when he went awol.
Posh at times played some good possession passing football, with Woodhouse and Sonner prompting it all, but the forward line let us down too often. Platt does a reasonable job but needs someone working off him, Willock clearly was rushed back too quick and was an ambarrassment because he wasnt able to run about like he can do. Constantine up front was too lightweight and doesnt want to shoot. He missed 2 complete sitters.
Huddersfield were poor, make no mistake. They had one ball, a little dink between the centre halves and we fell for it time and time again.
The first goal came because no one picked up the guy who scored, and when he fell over the ball in the first instance, Legg sat on the goalline and invited him to shoot instead of going in to win a tackle. He bottled it big time.
What our penalty was for I will never know, but the ref made several ridiculous decisions for both sides. We should have had 2 penaltys for handball before we got the one we did. But we deserved to be level at half time.
Newton moved up to right wing with Jenkins making a rare appearance at right back, and he was our best player second half. His passing from the back and forward runs and crosses were superb, although he didnt use Newton enough when he could have. Sonner disappeared from the game and got involved in silly things, and we badly missed Thompson. I dont go along with the cant play 3 games in a week bullshit - he is a professional highly tuned athlete. Change the record Fry.
And what the hell has Farrell done to be left on the bench? He is obviously a player we have to have on the pitch, and in a 442 he has to be on the left wing.
What the situation is with strikers being fit I dont know, but judging by this performance, I would expect to see a number of changes for todays game with Blackpool, namely Constantine out of the side along with Legg and Sonner, replaced by Clarke or Willock if fit up front with Platt, Faz left wing, Newton right wing with Jenkins in at right back after his good showing. Sonner does some nice pretty passing, but has no bite to allow Curtis to get forward more.
My verdict on this game was that Fry made a mess of team selection and tactics, and will pick Legg no matter what, which is wrong. The away form is the problem this season, and we should play 352 away from home, 442 at home where we are looking good (if you forget the MK game). I hope he gets it right, and that this apparant rift between him and Gould gets sorted, because I cannot stomach too many more games like this one having spent a lot of money on going to watch Posh away from home.
